St. Peter’s Memorial School, like our namesake, provides continuous spiritual and daily religious education that will be the basis, or rock, of their Roman Catholic faith.
The school day begins with the following morning prayers:
ST. PETER THE APOSTLE, PRAY FOR US
Students attend Mass at St. Peter the Apostle Church every Thursday, at 9:30 a.m., celebrated by The Rev. Father Agustin Escalante. The church is located directly behind the school at 1510 Matamoros. Students are encouraged to bring a small donation for the offertory basket.
Daily catechism lessons are incorporated into the school day as part of the academic curriculum for all grades.
First Holy Communion
Students in second grade, and others*, who meet all requirements set forth by the Diocese of Laredo will make the Sacrament of Holy Communion with their class at a special Mass celebrated at St. Peter the Apostle Church. Please contact the school religion teacher to ensure that your student has met all requirements.
Students are taught to serve as Jesus did, by helping others in the community. Service projects and special donations are planned throughout the year to fulfill this ministry.
ST. PETER APOSTLE
St. Peter was one of Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus for his first disciples, the first to be ordained by Jesus in the early church. He was a fisherman assigned a leadership role by Jesus and was with Jesus during events witnessed by only a few apostles, such as the Transfiguration.
According to Catholic belief, Peter was the first Bishop of Rome and chief pastor of the whole Roman Catholic Church – the Vicar of Christ on Earth, although Peter never bore these titles.
Peter is a name derived from the Greek word for petros, for rock.
“I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdowm of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” – Matthew 16:17-20
